brief: (client testimonial)
To preserve, restore and add to an existing family bach on Kawau Island. The original bach had been built in the 1940's and had received numerous additions that had removed the look and feel of the original bach as it was purchased by the family. The brief was to restore the bach to its former character and glory and bring it up to date to accommodate two generations of family who currently use it whilst preserving the treasure chest of memories and happy times already enjoyed at the holiday home.

Two houses on one site. The design intent was a fusion of European planning with a Kiwi aesthetic.

Mature trees on the original site were retained and the design fitted in around these. Mature trees help to make a site feel that it has always belonged and has always been there despite the development being new.

The final plans differ very little from the end result, only the pitched roof was removed from the upper timber boxes to be replaced by a flat roof.

brief:
“The name Kindergarten signifies both a garden FOR children, a location where they can observe and interact with nature, and also a garden OF children, where they themselves can grow and develop in freedom.........”

The intention behind this project was to place human welfare high on the priorities of good architecture. The project was to be considered as an opportunity to create a positive child-centred environment that could encourage and enhance physical, social and intellectual development and allow the nursery staff a rewarding and valued role in their interaction with and support of, the children.

The design allows for a variety of spaces and stimulants. All of the spaces can be opened up to make one large open playground or closed down to individual class rooms. Spaces are created for child-centred play and activities, a soft room, a fort for role play, a tree house etc. The facility provides for on site catering, staff areas, a parents room and caters for three age groups of children from 0.5 to 5years old on a day care basis.

The centre uses sustainable design as an integrated approach to education. Solar panels for power generation, water harvesting, grey water recycling. Herb and vegetable gardens are maintained and planted by the children and then harvested for use in the kitchen. Children grow and eat the food. They can tend to the planted wall and help nurture and create the environment they inhabit. Thermocramtic walls also form part of the design and children can use this as a drawing board using their own body heat to create ever-changing designs and patterns. This is then transferred into energy through the use of phase-change technology, the children literally create energy through play and interactive fun.

Symbology is also used throughout the design that encourages learning. All the patterns in the design are made up from the simple geometric shapes of the square, circle and triangle. These are used at varying scales as windows, cupboards, decoration and fencing, all in locations that children can engage and interact and learn.

brief:
To design a branded warehouse for a logistics company. The design intent was for a building that spoke of movement and could be easily recognised even without the company logos and branding. A simple design of two panel types allowed for unlimited combinations of facades. The warehouses could also be configured for different sizes easily by adding or removing bays depending on the site size and storage requirements.

The company philosophy was etched into the building facade and a kinetic sculpture was introduced in the separating link between warehouse and office accommodation. The kinetic sculpture was powered by a wind turbine and further wind turbines were incorporated along the ridge of the warehouse to provide lighting and power. The services for the building were all contained within a central accessible plant recess along the ridge. The warehouse and office accommodation were glazed full height looking into each other to provide a connection between the warehouse and administration staff with a connecting glass bridge between the two buildings.

Whilst completing the refurbishment of the existing hotel we were asked to design additions that would add approximately 100 new rooms. The design was to be modern, clean and fresh and to provide facilities that would accommodate guests and locals alike. A cinema, multi-purpose convention centre, gym, restaurant and bar were all accommodated in the main building for use by all.

The hotel guest rooms and private apartments were all contained on the upper slopes accessed via tunnels to the central circulation cores of each block of units.

The foot prints of the units was kept to a minimum on the upper slopes to maintain corridors of established native planting. The hotel additions were designed with green roofs which, once established, would recede the hotel more into the background. The planted roofs also provided landscape areas to the upper units of the development and a pleasant outlook when not gazing out to the stunning ocean scenery beyond.

The swimming pool at first floor level also provided a waterfall at the end of the bar. Glazed pool sides and strips along the bottom allowed for ever-changing light patterns to permeate through the bar and restaurant interiors creating an exciting and dynamic interior flooded with light.

brief:
Concept design for a golf course clubhouse for residents. A small friendly clubhouse that was comfortable and provided panoramic views out to the stunning and dramatic coastline that surrounded the golf course. This concept allowed for recreational facilities on the upper levels, changing and golf course activities on the lower level and a sheltered deck on the roof.

brief: (client testimonial)
A bach in Kinloch with views across Lake Taupo to Tongariro national park. The existing house was not orientated to make the most of the view. The views are to the south and the end of the house had been finished with a glazed conservatory that nobody used on the account of the room being too cold for the majority of the year.

Our brief was to open up the existing space to the view and to provide open plan socialising area for three generations of family. By kinking the existing house we could make the most of the view and provide the most economic addition to the existing house.

Early concept sketches are shown in the slide show below.
